How to transfer Skills?

Training can be a major tool to help you transfer skills..

This section is devoted to people who are or who aspire to be a trainer. It is aimed at helping you to improve your overall skill level. One thing you should always remember, training is all about being flexible. Although you may not give your audience what they want, you should always be in position to give it to them the way they want it...Or in others words, give it to them the way they want to take it.

Let's start with the principle which has the greatest impact. Before you start calling yourself a traininer and printing your own visiting cards, just know that apart from visiting cards you can also print your self Cheap Checks and use these to motivate yourself by wirting your fees.

Training principle 1: Training is a process of transfer of skills.

The Main objective of any training would be to pass along certain skills to your trainees. This should be the basic factor which decides the tone and tempo of your training. If at the end of the day, the trainees are able to display all the skills you have taught, you can consider that you have been successful in your mentoring.

You can implement this principle in the following way:
List out 10-12 behaviors/skills, which you want to pass on to your trainees. You can then write it down in specific words and sentences.
Then, display this behavior consistently through out the training in 3 different modes

very obvious
subtle
with humor

If you can come up with some more, great. I found these to be very effective with me. The Key is in shifting between the modes effortlessly, a number of times. In effect, you are not only telling them what to do, but behaviorally displaying it to them. Right then and there.

From experience I know that a few trainers may be doing it unconsciously. You can give a boost to its effectiveness when you are doing it consciously, rather than let it happen by chance.

Conscious mind can pick out 5±2 units of information at any point of time. The unconscious mind, on the other hand, does not have any limit. When you are training people on a conscious level by using pictures, words and feeling, you are only reaching about 20% of their capacity.

When you develop group rapport and consistently demonstrate these behaviors while you are consciously talking to them, the unconscious mind, which is in rapport with you, will readily accept the suggestions.

Training principle 2:To influence others, be able to influence yourself.

Let me explain: I admit it is not an easy task to get a whole bunch of people to do what you want them to do unless they really want to do it. There is some amount of selling involved here. Those who don’t recognize this will suffer heavy losses during the skills training that they plan to undertake.

It means that you stop talking - Internally as well as externally - and pay attention to what is being said (verbally and non-verbally). Next, you may find it good to ask a few questions and understand what the people need.

In a group setting, it would be difficult to speak to every one. So what you might want to do is ask a few people. Focus specially on the ones who are trying to hide themselves.

Ask them questions and make a note of the kind of words used. If they all come from the same background, These are the words most of them will use commonly. Make sure you use these words often in the training. It is a great way to build rapport and make them feel comfortable.

Training principle 3: Give them a sensory rich experience.

It means they should not only be hearing your words, not only doing the exercise, not only watching others do. They should be doing all of the above and more.

Studies after studies have shown that students can learn faster in a lab setup than a classroom because they have more choice in how they internally represent the situation in their mind. More choices you give them, more they will remember and more easily it will be integrated in their behavior.

Follow the rule of three here.
1. They watch you demonstrate the skill/behavior.
2. They practice and demonstrate this skill/behavior.
3. They mentally rehearse this skill/behavior in a future situation.

Ok let's have an example.

Your objective behavior is to demonstrate the powerful way of using the word "but"
The theory behind "but" is that what ever you put in front of "but" will be lost on mind and it will focus on the statement following the "but".
Very confusing, isn't it?

Example:
You are a good worker but, you screwed this one up
You screwed this one but, you are a good worker.
Which one is more positive and gives a better direction?
continue your communication skills training.
