Communication Skills Questions: Answered

Communication Skills Questions is the place where I answer your questions. I get many questions from my visitors on different issues relate to communication skills. Some questions are interesting while others are just empty words. Then there are questions which keep popping up often. So I am putting such questions and answers right here .

Expect this page to be long and to change quite often. If you have a question, head over to contact us and ask your question there. There are a lot of typos in the questions and that is because I have printed the questions as I have got them and I have not edited the questions for grammar.

  Communication Skills Questions 1.

Q: I'm needing to see research evidence on active listening.  I'm writing a research proposal on the phenomenology of listening.  I have a question how active is active enough when listening?  If two people disagree have they not been listening?                                        Jeff O

A: I am not a big fan of lab research. I believe in using what works now. Your question

 Communication Skills Questions 2.

Q: How active is active enough when listening? If two people disagree have they not been listening?

A: Actually your question does not make sense in English. Even though I can derive a meaning out of your question based on your possible intent and just sheer experience with words, it still will never be exactly what you meant.

If your question was, let’s say

How active should active listening be?

Then my answer would be that you are not listening with your full attention. Just like the eye has the foveal and peripheral vision, listening also are two types and both of the happen simultaneously. You have the main focus of listening which should ideally be where your attention is directed and then the peripheral listening which will absorb and identify the surrounding situations.

Your second Communication Skills Questions was:

Q: If two people disagree have they not been listening?

A: Maybe. Disagreement need not be just because he did not hear it all. It may also be due to the disagreement to the content of what was said.

For example, if in a conversation someone asked you to give all your money to them just like that, do you think you will change your mind if you had heard them with 100% attention. Of course not!!!

That is because you disagree with the content, not because you did not listen to them properly.

 Hope that answers your question.

I am sorry I cannot (and will not) bother with checking if someone has done research in this area. I belong to the school of trial and error method.

Communication Skills Questions 3

Q: Hi there, I am impressed with your site. I would like to see more regarding communication-skills that are required for IT (computer) professionals. What are the minimum skills that are required for software trainees

Thanks Prabhakar.

A: Hi Prabhakar.

I guess the IT guys need to use more RAM and ROM in their lingo to make them sound like pros. Just kidding.

I am sure you have your own set of jargon that is used to communicate. What I have seen in my workshops with the IT guys is that even good techies are not very congruent and confident in their communication and sometimes they wonder why they are not moving ahead.

They  need to have the ability to communicate with other with ease and if they will be contacting people from other cultures, it is better if they can be given some culture specific training so they can understand the clients better.

Communication training should not just be related to the words they use but also the non verbal behaviour. Each company has their own benchmark in what they consider a good level of communication skills and hence this is a very debatable requirement. Just a degree is no guarantee that you can communicate well.

I  Hope this helps you.

Communication Skills Questions 4

Q: HELLO MY FRIEND, HOW ARE YOU?. I WANNA ASK YOU about anew communication -based -strategy to enhance reading comprehension and acquiring new vocabulay. Another topic is about think aloud strategy in reading.              Thanks a lot,  see you.                                     mohammed

A: Hi Mohammed

I can see that you are interested in developing your language skills. Reading comprehension can be increased by actively participating in the content that you are actually reading.

For example if  you are reading a book, ask questions about what you just read and try and go back to the book and ponder the meanings of the word and their function, how they affect the overall meaning of the whole Para or the message itself. The more you involve yourself with the material that you are reading the better your comprehension will get but this will happen over time. It needs a lot of practice and patience.

Keep reading books on different topics  by different authors to help you develop flexibility in comprehension.

Thinking aloud has often been confused to be a sign of weirdness and geeky behaviour. Don’t worry. Some of the most brilliant people in the world used to think aloud.

Einstein for example used to not only think aloud but also daydream and that’s how he came up with the Theory of relativity. So continue to think aloud without any hesitation. However be conscious of the situation you are in.
